Hanhart is a German manufacturer that specialized in producing chronographs for the German Air Force, including the Luftwaffe in World War II through the West German Air Force in the 1950s. The Hanhart 417 is a relatively rare watch. It is estimated that only 500 were made in either pure stainless steel (reference 417ES) or chromed brass.

The Hanhart 417 ES 1954 was preceded by a similar model from Hanhart known as the 417 ES. The differences are minor and, from what I can tell, are limited to the size of the case. When we reissued the legendary 417 ES two years ago in a 42 mm stainless steel case, it marked the beginning of a great success story for Hanhart. Earlier this year, we released an additional version — the 417 ES 1954 — which, with its 39 mm case, e size as the historical watch dwelling in our museum.

The 2020 rendition of the Hanhart 417 ES. The case, dial and hands. The design of the case remains largely the same, but updated to 42mm in diameter instead of the original's 39mm. The three piece case with very sleek, long horns as lugs, is robust and well built. The case back is also in stainless steel and is a screw down type.
